Workshops:
The Department has two well equipped workshops with necessary tools, equipments and machineries and a leather section for fabricating of rehabilitation aids and appliances, to provide for services to Persons With Disabilities and training the students of Prosthetic and Orthotic courses.
Fitment of Rehabilitation Aids and Appliances:
Physical disabilities restrict the individual to perform activities as a productive member of the Society. The factor influence the productivity of a Person With Disabilities due to nature of disabilities which constraint a person’s capacity for self directed purposeful movement. Walking is the most common form of Mobility for Human beings and the mode is walking most desired by the people for movement. The Prosthetic and Orthotic Devices and other rehabilitation aids assist the Person With Disabilities to achieve a level of performance that at best approaches that of the able bodied person. The department has well equipped Prosthetics and Orthotics Workshop, Prosthetic and Orthotic professionals who design, fabricate and fit suitable and appropriate prosthetics and orthotics devices for
Person With Disabilities.
Prosthetic Devices :
Lower Limb Prosthesis:
Prosthetic Devices (Artificial Limbs) are functional and Cosmetic replacement of the missing part of the amputated limb. The amputee who lost part of his Lower limb can use Artificial limb for walking. The department of Prosthetics and Orthotics fabricate and fit Partial Foot Knee Prosthesis, Symes Prosthesis, Bellow Knee Prosthesis, Through Knee Prosthesis, Above Knee Prosthesis, Hip Disarticulation Prosthesis and Extension Prosthesis and make fitments to Person With Disabilities of various level of amputation.
Upper Limb Prosthesis:
The Upper Limb Prosthesis are designed and fabricated for Upper Limb Amputees to restore grasp function and cosmetic appearance. The various types of Upper Limb Prosthesis designed and fabricated by the department are Partial Hand Prosthesis, Carpometacarpal Prosthesis, Wrist Disarticulation Prosthesis, Below elbow Prosthesis, Above Elbow Prosthesis and Shoulder Disarticulation Prosthesis.
Orthotic Devices :
The Orthotic Devices are generally used for management of various Orthopaedic and Neuromuscular disorders including congenital deformity of lower limb, upper limb and spine. The devices are used for wide spectrum of physical disabilities. They are used to correct the deformity, to maintain the correction and support the unstable part of the body. The various types of Lower Limb Orthosis are Foot Orthosis, Ankle Foot Orthosis, Knee Orthosis, Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis, Hip Orthosis, Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis etc. The types of Upper Limb Orthosis are Wrist Hand Orthosis, Elbow Orthosis and Elbow Wrist Hand Orthosis etc. The Spinal Orthosis like Sacroiliac Belt, Lumbo-Sacral Belt, Lumbo-Sacral Corset and Thoraco-lumbosacral Orthosis (PP) are also provided.
Camps and outreach program:
To provide the rehabilitation services to the Persons With Disabilities in rural, tribal, remote and interior areas, the Institute has been conducting rehabilitation camps in collaboration with District Authorities and NGOs to provide aids and appliances in different states of the country including Odisha.
i. Assessment Camp:
In the first phase assessment Camps are conducted to asses and evaluate the Person With Disabilities and their needs for various types of Aids and Appliances. This will facilitate to derive the exact number of aids and appliances required for particular camp. After procurement of the required number of aids appliances they were distributed to the Person With Disabilities under Rehabilitation camps.
ii. Assessment cum Distribution camp:
Assessment cum Distribution camps are conducted to asses and evaluate the Person With Disabilities and at the same time aids and appliances were provided to the Person With Disabilities at the camp site. If the number of PWD exceeds the numbers of aids and appliances, the balance aids and appliances were provided in the second phase under Rehabilitation camp.
iii. Rehabilitation Camp:
Rehabilitation camps are organized in a planned manner and the aids and appliances were distributed at the Camp based on the list of the Person With Disabilities identified in the earlier assessment camp.
