The concept of Social Work emerged during IInd World War and recognized as a profession. Social work as a professional service under Governmental and Non- Governmental auspices, potentially available to every member of the community irrespective of his means, to assist him in achieving his full potentialities for productive and satisfying living. Social work is a systematic method of providing for the support and /or rehabilitation of economically dependent groups, e.g., the unemployed, the sick, the handicapped, the aged, the mentally ill, widows, the dependent children etc.
Since 1989 Social & Vocational Rehabilitation section started functioning under the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine & Surgery for providing Socio-Vocational Rehabilitation services to Persons with Disabilities and Teaching activities to degree students of PT, OT & PO.
With increasing priority on Social Rehabilitation model by United Nations, Department of Social Work, created in the year 2012, recognizing the importance of Social work in Rehabilitation and to strengthen the Socio- Economic activities for enhancing the lives of individual Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and Development of Human Resource as well as Research activities in the field of social work blended with a right based approach. Rehabilitation services aim to acknowledge the equal rights of people with disabilities to be full members of the community by assisting them in developing their physical, mental and social capabilities to the fullest possible extend and by promoting their integration into the community.
Objective
Skill Development Training to PwDs:
Ongoing Training
1. Act as active member of the rehabilitation team from admission to discharge of the PWDs.
2. Socio- Economic assessment of persons with Locomotor Disability and family.
3. Arrangements/ Linkage for social, educational, vocational, recreational services including training, self employment, placement, promotion of SHGs of PWDs etc.
4. Public awareness, education, training & orientation at various operational levels, conferences & workshops etc.
5. Conduct/ participate training & teaching programmes for professionals as well as Persons With Disabilities and their families.
6. Productions of awareness kits, materials, posters, leaflets, booklets & Literatures, TV spots.
7. Liaison with NGOs/GOs for implementation of programmes/schemes for the total rehabilitation of the disabled persons i.e. for Education, Vocational Training, Self employment and Placement, Referral & Extension services.
8. Act as Nodal officer of NHFDC.

Research
Undertake studies on socio-economic & cultural aspects of disability and rehabilitation.
Publication
The department publishes different kits, posters, leaflets, booklets etc. in Odia, Hindi and English for Public information and Awareness.
Sports and Cultural Programmes for PWDs.
Sports and cultural events are organized for children, male and female PwDs in different occasions like on the eve of International Day of Disabled Persons on 3rd December and Raising day of the Institute.
