    Department of Physiotherapy

    Physiotherapy is a branch of modern treatment that deals with the disease and disorders by physical means such as Exercise, Mobilization, Manipulation, Traction, Electricity, Magnetism, Heat, Light, Water, Ice, Ultrasound etc. It is not merely application of physical modalities but it includes total client care i.e. evaluation, assessment, treatment, planning, application and advise. It deals with Musculoskeletal, Neuromuscular, Cardiopulmonary, Paediatrics, Geriatrics and all surgical conditions.

    Physiotherapy services are provided to outdoor and indoor differently abled patients. The department is equipped with latest and sophisticated equipments such as Phyaction 787 (multi current system), Biostim 6040 (Biofeedback system), Intellect 750 and 580, Combination Therapy, SWD and Pulsed electromagnetic wave, Eltrac (Computerized traction machine with movable and adjustable bed), He-Ne Laser, EMG-NC machine, Microwave diathermy machine, Interferrential therapy machine, Intermittent pneumatic device, Contrast bath, Ice-flecker, Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) for the knee, Multi-gym, Ergometer, Home traction kits, Rehabilitation treadmill, Recumbent bike, Hand evaluation kits, Skin fold caliper Upper and Lower limb Ergo meter, Isokinetic unit, Spirometer unit and Inspiratory Muscle Trainer etc.
    The department has 03 Units such as Musculoskeletal Unit (Manual Therapy & Traction, Electro Therapy, Heat Therapy and Actino Therapy), Paediatrics Unit and Neuro Rehabilitation Unit.

    Musculoskeletal Unit: Various musculoskeletal disorders such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, stiff joint, periarthritis of shoulder, osteoarthritis, Tennis Elbow, arthritic conditions, hand injury, amputee including sports injuries are treated by mobilisation, manipulation, traction and electrotherapy etc.

    Paediatrics Unit:Erb’s palsy, Myopathy, Congenital deformities, Cerebral palsy etc. conditions are treated by Developmental Therapy, Normal Movement Therapy, Motor Learning Programme etc.

    Neuro Rehabilitation Unit: Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Myopathy, Head Injury, Polyneuropathy, peripheral nerve injury, Parkinsonism, Hansen’s Disease, Ataxia, etc. Neuromuscular conditions are treated by Normal Movement Therapy. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular facilitation technique, Motor Relearning programme etc.

    The Patients are allotted to therapists who evaluate, assess and plan out the treatment and execute the therapy. Difficult and problematic cases are discussed in the departmental meetings and therapeutic measures appropriate for them are given. Suitable “Home exercise programmes“ are advised to patients.

    Electrotherapy – Electrical stimulation, Interferential therapy, TENS etc

    Actinotherapy – Ultraviolet, Infrared Radiation, LASER etc.

    Heat therapy – Paraffin wax bath, moist heat, Ultrasound, Short Wave Diathermy,Microwave Diathermy etc.

    Exercise therapy
    Manual therapy including traction and soft tissue manipulation
    Hydrotherapy and Cryotherapy
    Misc- CDG-Gait analyser, KIN KOM-Isokinetic unit, Pulsed Electromagnetic energy, Biofeedback etc.

    Apart from classroom lectures, clinical and practical demonstrations, weekly seminars, case presentations, journal discussions, etc. are also arranged for students, interns and M.P.T. (Rehab.) students. The passed out students are successfully placed in different Hospitals/Institutes within the country and abroad. Study tour is a part of study programme, usually the final year students visit various Institutes of the country for two weeks.

    Currently the Institute conducts a four and a half (4 ½)years (including six months Internship) degree course in Physiotherapy (B.P.T.) with an intake capacity of 62 seats and two (02) years duration Master of Physiotherapy (M.P.T) Course with an intake capacity of 15 seats. The specializations available for MPT are ‘Rehabilitation’ and ‘Musculoskeletal Conditions’, Pediatrics’, & Neurology’. Semester system of examination is introduced for the BPT course with effect from 2008 admission and 2009 examination.

    It conducts short orientation courses for qualified Physiotherapists of the country and for the Persons With Disabilities and their family members also. The participants are paid TA and DA as per Government rules.

    Guest speakers are invited for delivering lectures in long term courses and short term courses.

    After successful completion of 4 year BPT course the students undergone six months rotatory internship. Outside students may also apply for internship programme as per the norm fixed by the Institute.

    Mr. P. P. Mohanty, Associate Prof. (PT) has been appointed as Member, Board of Study of BPT course of the Chhattisgarh AYUSH and Health Science University, Board of Study of BPT/BOT, MPT/MOT, PG in Yoga course of the Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and Physiotherapy course of Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok.

    Dr.P.P. Mohanty, Assoc. Prof. and HOD, Physiotherapy has received the following awards:

    1. C.P. Nair award by Indian Association of Physiotherapist (IAP) at Jaipur, Rajasthan in 2004.
    2. IAP fellowship award in 2010.
