    Department of Psychology

    Psychology is one of the vital disciplines in the field of Rehabilitation and is being declared as a Rehabilitation Profession under the RCI Act 1992. The post of Psychologist was created in 1999 under Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Surgery (DRMS) and it is declared as an independent department in 2012 to provide better and independent patient service and academic activities.
    The Department of Psychology has three major activities i.e., Academic activities, clinical activities and Research activities. Academic activities include teaching in Psychology as compulsory subject for three long-term courses i.e. PT, OT and P & O and several short-term programmes. Clinical activities include the early identification, assessment, planning, providing psychological services and counselling. Clinical activities include the early identification, assessment and planning and providing psychological services and counselling and constant Research Activities with various types of inpatients and outpatients attending the Institute.

    PRIMARY GOAL:-

    1. To undertake teaching of psychology in undergraduate, Master Degree courses
    2. To undertake short term orientation courses for parents, qualified Therapist, Psychologist and High School teachers and primary school teachers
    3. To improve present functions of identification and early intervention, evaluation & assessment, planning and execute psychological services including counselling.
    4. Primary goal is to facilitate the patients’ maximum possible psychological adjustment throughout the various stages of comprehensive rehabilitation

    LONG TERM GOAL:-

    1. To develop the department as an excellent centre for providing Psycho- Rehabilitation service to PWD’s specially children with special needs.
    2. In future department will take up conduct of post-graduate diploma in rehabilitation psychology/ mental retardation/ multiple disabilities.
    3. Take up project work in the field of Psychology.

    Psychological services are provided to outdoor and indoor disabled patients. The department provides counselling for parents, family members, caretakers of CP, MR, Autistic, ADHD & Multiple disabled children. It also provide services for early identification, early intervention and treatment plan for cerebral palsy, Mental Retardation, Autistic, ADHD and Multiple disabilities. The department also provides psychological services for Paraplegia, Hemiplegia, Accidental cases, Trauma cases, Amputee cases and other rehabilitation cases. The Department motivates the patient to accept the disability, provide psychological services and behaviour therapy, Play therapy, Guidance in special education and Learning Disabilities.

    The HOD of the department has been appointed as Member of Board of Studies in B.Ed. special Education (Mental Retardation) for the Academic Session (2012-2013) by Berhampur University

    Resource Person
    The HOD of the department has been invited as a guest faculty and resource person to teach Psychology in NGOs.
